Drafted 2003 - Third round from College

Marcum was a two way player in college but most teams prefered him as a pitcher. MArcum throws a 89-91 fastball, a changeup, a curveball and a plus slider. Marcum doesn't overpower hitters and control is his best attribute.

Marcum's description from MLB draft page - Medium, athletic frame. Quick arm, proper action. Three average pitches. 3/4 slider tight, sharp break in zone, out pitch. Flashes average, 12-6 curve. Maintains arm speed with change. Stuff gives player chance.

2006 Outlook

Marcum will be in the AAA rotation and look for a call-up in September, or sooner.

2005

Marcum was assigned to AA to start the year and made nine dominating starts before being promoted to AAA. At AAA Marcum started well but had a terrible July, but got back on track inj August, leading to a September promotion to Toronto. After his promotion to AAA Marcum's gave up more hits but his K rate increased.

2004

Marcum was assigned to A Charleston to start the year. On June 23rd Marcum was promoted to High A - Dunedin. Marcum maintained his great control throughout all of 2004, at A ball he had a K/BB ratio over 6 and a WHIP just over 1. After his promotion to High A Marcum's K rate dipped as expected, but his walk rate declined also. Marcum ended with an ERA just over 3 to cap an excellent second season.

2003

Marcum appeared in 21 games at Low A. He pitched very well with control being his strong point.

Here is what Batters Box had to say about Marcum's season: A two-way collegian, Marcum actually made the Missouri Valley Conference’s All-Star team in 2002 as a utility player; in 2003, he played shortstop and cracked 7 homers with a .280/.331/.427 line. But his best position was on the mound: in his two years as a reliever and then as a record-setting closer at Southwest Missouri State (he transferred from Mizzou after an unsuccessful freshman year there), his combined line was 76 IP, 68 H, 16 BB, 82 K. Like Justin James, Shaun (the Jays’ third-round choice in 2003) doesn’t have an overwhelming repertoire, but he does throw his 90ish fastball, a 12-to-6 curve and a nasty slider (his out pitch) for strikes, and he has the makings of a decent change-up too. The Jays have been known to draft a closer and put him into the rotation, and I expect they’ll try the same with Marcum. His numbers at Auburn were tremendous, even for a reliever, and he’ll be 22 next spring, so he’ll very likely get a promotion to Dunedin. If he makes the Bush transition from dominant reliever to dominant starter, then the Jays have struck gold again.
